"2008
Tournament"
One
fish. Two fish. Red fish. Blue fish. Black fish. Blue fish. Old
fish. New fish. This one has a little star. This one has a little
car. Say! What a lot of fish there are."
Dr. Seuss
We got 9 beautiful days of weather and while the fishing was tough
we saw some great catches. The Day category brought 1783.62 pounds
to the scale and Overnighters weighed in 5060.18lbs. Thanks to
all for playing and being good sports.
The 2008 HOI ended with UNICORN V (Bud Brandt) returning from
his Saturday trip and SARABEL (Edward Schroeder) and BREAKAWAY
(Kevin Falvey) taking one last shot at changing the Day standings.
Kevin brought in 2 mahi (15.96, 13) besting his own third place
at 11:40am.
And the winners are:

With the tolling of the tournament closing bell,
the party prep kicked in. Thanks to Cord, Doug, Alex, Tim, Christian,
Greg, Tosh, Mike and Brennan for their brawn in putting up the
furnishings in the tent. Joan and the restaurant staff were busy
bees getting things turned around for us.
The Awards Dinner continues to be the most fun
you can have with 650 of your friends (as for me it was more fun
than I should EVER have in one night, recovery has been slow ).
As always, Oakland's served a great meal with style and efficiency.
Raffle tickets were in hot demand keeping Joanne, Brian T, Bonnie
and our other salespeople busy and the silent auction tent was
full all night. I don't know who the green ticket raffle winners
were, but I did see a very happy gentleman wheeling a grill (thanks
Rob Maloney/Shinnecock Hardware) out to his car. Congratulations
to Cathy Warner on winning the Zodiac donated by Spellman's Marine,
to Hamptons Bays High School Principal Chris Richardt on winning
the Truck and the boat once again went to a lucky out-of-town
winner. Fred Lederman went home with one of the Tackle packages.
At the mic, Scott thanked the tournament committee and the sponsors.
And with cameras flashing, the tournament winners were announced
and presented with beautiful trophies created by Fish Unlimited
Taxidermy.
A huge thank you to all our sponsors and contributors--without
you we wouldn't have cool stuff to wish for and win. And thank
you to everyone who purchased tickets or bid on the Silent Auction--without
you we couldn't continue to support the children and families
in our community that need the services of Big Brothers Big Sisters
of Long Island.
The final tally of this year's fundraising is still being crunched.
Watch for the big announcement.
Ray Geminski will be giving me the event photos later this week.
I'll let you know when the gallery is up and ready for viewing.
You will be able to download low resolution versions for emailing.
If you find a photo that you'd like to print, Ray will send you
a cd with the high res version. Thanks to Ray for his donation
of time and services this week.
For me, it was a wonderful 10 days. I got to meet new people and
reconnect with some old friends. I got to work and snack with
great people and work on my tan. I had a lot of laughs and hope
you did too.
So until next year, I leave you with the immortal words to that
classic song:
Goodnight, Sweetheart, well it's time to go,/Goodnight, Sweetheart,
well it's time to go./I hate to leave you, but I really must say,/'Goodnight,
Sweetheart, goodnight!'
Sleep well, you anglers of the deep, may you dream of calm seas
and fantastic catches.

VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
8-22-06
Some
early materials listed the Awards Dinner as 3pm. THE PARTY IS
5PM. Don't come early, you'll have to wait in the parking lot.
Also, don't forget your most important wardrobe accessory--your
wristband. These stylish bracelets go with anything you'll wear
to the party so don't worry about making a fashion faux pas.
MANNERS MATTER:
At the party you will find RESERVED tables
for the sponsors who generously support the HOI. Please be respectful
and do not remove/move these signs. There's room for everyone.
Thanks.
Email me your marlin pictures. Jim Gatto has
set up the leaderboard so you can click on a name and see the
catch. Just make sure you include your name, the date of the catch
and species. I'd hate to put your blue marlin under someone else's
name.
What a difference 365 days make--last year I couldn't
get you guys out two days in a row but we caught the heck out
of the fish; this year, we had mint weather but not so great fishing.
Maybe next year, the nexus will collide and we'll have the best
of both scenarios. All 41 of the overnight boats made it out and
only 8 of those didn't make all their trips; on the day side everybody
made at least 2 trips and 17 of the 31 entries left the dock 4
times. So we had 100% participation--yea team!!
Today started a bit different than the other weigh-ins.
Amy, George, Brian, Ray and I were greeted by "Chief Icaughttheonlydaycategoryalbie"
(aka Rick Fayer, SKIDZ) wearing his ceremonial feather headdress.
He broke out into a happy dance when he got on the board with
a 34 lber. (I forgot to mention Rick's part in Friday's festivities
when he presented a 2lb porgy for club standings. ) 15 daytrippers
took a chance today but only 5 returned with the goods. ALYSSA
ROSE (William Durbec) walked up to the scale with a 9.32 mahi,
followed by C-JOY's (Walter/John Dreyer) 16.64 mahi. Bill Altman
from the DEBORAH A showed us his 6.92 and 6.68 bluefish. SANDRA
JEANNE (Chuck/Mike Forman) closed the day category weigh-in with
3 mahi (13.52, 11.16, 10.96).

Big Eye--the fish is winning
We saw or heard from the 15 overnights from Friday,
plus TOTAL RETURN (Brian Nydegger) who ventured out for the day.
REEL TIME (Steve Rizzo) put up a 101 mako that kept the box empty
on the leaderboard and reported a 90lb white marlin release. FISHEYES
(Jim Dubrowsky) knocked PATIENCE (Shawn Pobiner) out of third
place yellowfin with a 74lber. JACLYNN-ROE (Ron Moschetta) went
to the head of the mahi list with a 22.42lber and told us about
his two white marlin releases (60 and 100). And then REEL LUCKY
(John Haley) pulled up to the scale...with the new first place
big eye (253.50). CATHY'S CHOICE (Anthony Prudenti) patiently
waited for his turn to weigh-in two big eyes (172 and 162) and
2 mahi (6.52 and 5.45) to close the weigh-in for today.

Canyon Bound (Carmine Zoccolillo) and Unicorn V
(Bud Brandt) left today for a quick return tomorrow, but Carmine
was already back by the end of weigh-in tonight so we're just
waiting for Bud and whoever leaves from the day category for any
last minute changes to the board.
No matter what, by noon Sunday it'll all be over
except for the celebrating of a great week of fishing and friendship.
A big thank you to everyone who helped out at the Captain's meeting/the
send-offs/the weigh-ins, sold raffle tickets, came and snacked
with us, the anglers and our families--you all play an important
role in the success of the HOI.
See you under the tent.

TGIF (Thank Goodness It's Fish)! The average
was still only one in three, but hey, it's better than nothing.
15 overnighters came home from far away and 18 day boats returned.
Right off the bat, things were busy. SUNDAZE (Ernie Spellman)
jumped to the top of the yellowfin list with an 87, got on the
board at third with a 47.5 albacore and scaled a 12.82 mahi. SHELDRAKE
(Nathaniel Kramer) showed us their yellowfin (52.5) and an albie
(41.00) and added a blue marlin (250) to the catch and release
list. FLYN LOW (Rich Davin) brought in a 7.7 mahi and ROTTEN KID
IV (Paul Albarano) jumped to the top of the mahi list with a 20.08.
The rumors of a big albie on the BARBARIC (Gregg DeSantis) were
true when he grabbed first with a 61lber. ARIEL (Ned Kaplan) closed
the weigh-in with a 177.5 big eye and a 39lb wahoo.
BREAKAWAY (Kevin Falvey) pulled up to the scale with his first
fish of the tournament and landed a 21.5 yellow and 3 mahi (14.98,
11.66, 6.98) and got on the board for 3rd place mahi. ABLE HAND's
(Howard Kessler) bluefish (7.20) was good for third. Mark Freedman
brought 4 mahis (7.78, 7.1, 6.4, 6.06) that put him in second.
MY JENNY (the boat formerly known as SARABEL, Edward Schroeder)
tried with a 112.5 mako. Mike Gallagher on REBEL released a 125
blue marlin. SANDRA JEANNE (Mike/Chuck Forman) had high hopes
for their mahi (12.62, 9.6, 9.14). A 63.5 yellow put WHITE WATER
(Anthony Vaccaro) in first for the species by one pound. Second
place mahi (16.26) went to DONNA G (Paul Grosser). BIMINI BUM
(Tony Vaccaro) caught me as I was leaving and let me know about
his 80 white marlin.

Thanks to Doug for the yummy treats today and thanks to the Catarellas
and Amy for spending their Friday Happy Hour with us at the weigh-in
station.
Don't forget, if you plan on going out on Sunday (and I hope you
don't) you MUST BE BACK BY NOON.
Sunday's Party starts at 5pm so start looking for your wristbands.
Tomorrow there's 11 blue boats returning and I bet quite a few
of the daytrippers will take a shot, let's see what the day brings.
See you at the dock.

"I
pray the Lord my soul to keep/While fishing out here in the deep./And
may You grant my fondest wish/And help me land a giant fish."
Excerpt of "The Fisherman's Prayer"
by Larry Howland
8-21-06
I'm
just praying that I don't get mistaken for a big eye tuna by a
weary water warrior after snacking my way through 6 days of slow
weigh-ins.
Oh, we had such high hopes for today. 19 Day boats, 6 Overnighters
from Wednesday and 3 daytripping Overnighters were due. Yet, there
I was noshing on spinach/artichoke dip, chips, salsa and chocolate
along with Brian, Ray, the Wischs (Sherry and Malcolm), Kena,
and my friends Barb and Joanne waiting for fish. We were happy
to share our treats with passers-by including Gabby and Todd,
the Ledermans and various crew members and spectators.
REEL ACTION (Doug Oakland) was in when I got to the dock this
afternoon, but held off weighing in so Doug Jr could be there
to see what their 2 big eyes did to the standings--and good things
come to those who wait, they took first with a 181 and a 155.5.
TIGER LILY (Carl Schlanger) came back with Howard, Adam, Alex,
James and crew with a 143.5 big eye and a 57lb swordfish. OCEAN
RAIDER (Mark Edwards) jumped to the top of the mahi list with
a 18.8, a 7.0 and 6.7.
OVERNIGHT as of 8/21 Big Eye: 181 Reel Action (Doug Oakland)
158.5 Fox Sea Lady (Tony Gatto)

7.54 Gusto IV (John/Brian Hyland)
6.12 Fisheyes (Jim Dubrowsky)
Woody and the crew of the FISHIN' MISSION continued their quest
to be the boat that returns closest to the closing of a weigh-in
but still arrive in time to have their fish count. And timing
is everything--their 7.22lb Mahi caught by Ryan put them in third.
SPELLMAN'S MARINE (Doug Wells) let us know about their 300 blue
marlin catch/release and VICTORIA (Michael Gadman) called in a
70 lb white marlin.

It's not nice to fool with the Weigh Master General. Nice try.
Tomorrow we welcome 15 overnighters and any number of daytrippers.
See you at the dock.

"Wishin'
and hopin' /And thinkin' and prayin'/Plannin' and dreamin' "
Dusty Springfield could have been singing about this year's HOI
anglers. Just in case things pick up, I have a choir of heavenly
hosts practicing the Hallelujah Chorus.
8-20-06
So Jane Murray and I were there wishin' and
hopin' along with Brian and Ray from 4 until 6:40 when FISHIN'
IMPOSSIBLE (Mark Freedman) pulled up with a 38.5 yellow and photos
of the blue marlin (225) and white marlin (70) they released today.
And my favorite Irish French-restaurant-owner Frank Lenihan of
LE DAY OFF showed us a yellow (27.5--too small for the tourney,
but perfect for the bbq) and a 5.74 mahi. The remaining 5 Daytrippers
radioed in their sad news.
PATIENCE (Shawn Pobiner) returned from his overnight with no news
except the release of two white marlins. UNICORN V's (Bud Brandt)
maiden 2008 HOI voyage didn't bring them to the scales and TOTAL
RETURN (Brian Nydegger) took on a nasty smoking habit that kept
them from weighing in their fish.
Not from today, but we heard about SEA-U-II releasing a white
marlin (est. 50lbs) and a blue marlin (est. 250) and DENI-LOU
reported a 250 blue marlin
Thanks to another member of the Send-off crew--Bill Tymann of
Big Brothers Big Sisters of LI has been there almost every morning,
sharing in the fun of catching drop cards in a net.
Haskell's Outfitters is making up flats and buckets of fresh spearing.

Supplies of dinner tickets are rapid dwindling. If you need more,

I've heard rumors that tomorrow could be a busy day for the day
guys and there are 7 overnighters coming in, so come on down and
wait with me. I've got snacks :)
See you at the dock.

Long story short for Day 4:
8-19-06
Overnighter
REEL ACTION (Doug Oakland) returns with nothing
Daytripper FOUR CLOVERS (Jim Schneider) returns with nothing
Daytripper FISHIN' MISSION (Woody Worth) gets on board with bluefish
(9.44, 9.26, 8.1, 7.9).
Overnighters PATIENCE (Shawn Pobiner) and UNICORN V (Bud Brandt)
leave
Oh wait....that's the whole story.
Thanks to Steve Catarella for his companionship and coverage when
I had to leave the weigh-in early.
Hoping Wednesday is better.
See you at the dock.
Kathy Hummel

"The farther you travel to
fish, the worse the fishing will be. However, it will improve
immediately after you leave to return home, thus the old saying:
The fishing is always better the day before you get there and
the day after you leave"
8-18-06
While
the quote is credited to Anonymous, the sentiment may have been
heard over the radio from many of our overnighters who returned
today disappointed. 17 overnights came home from their Sunday
night adventure but only 8 showed up at weigh-in. BARBARA ANN
(Kevin Basham) kicked things off with a 77.5 wahoo and then SHELDRAKE
(Nathaniel Kramer) showed us their 77.5 swordfish caught west
of the dip. FISHEYES (Jim Dubrowsky) crew member Larry Luce walked
over their two mahi (6.12 and 6.06) putting them on the board
in 2nd place. MAXIMUS (Bill Demchak) jumped to the top of the
yellowfin category with a 83.5lber, and also weighed in a 67lb
wahoo and reported an estimated 65lb white marlin. JACLYNN ROE
(Ron Moschetta) wheeled two yellowfins (51.5 and 44.5) up to the
scales. Tony Gatto backed FOX SEA LADY up to the scale and off-loaded
the new first place big eye (158.5) and a 32.5 wahoo. SUNDAZE's
(Ernie Spellman) big eyes (123.5, 106.5) put them in third. ROTTEN
KID (Paul Albarano) broke the albie drought with a 48lber. BABARIC
(Gregg DeSantis) tried to get on the board with his 83lb big eye.
Nothing else came in for the boards, but HOT PURSUIT II radioed
in a white marlin (est. 75lb) and young Sam Kaplan (THE ARIEL)
reported his estimated 50lb white marlin (I think the fish probably
weighed more than Sam does).
Found out today, that REEL TIME (Steve Rizzo) had a white marlin
(est. 65) and a blue marlin (est. 125) on his Sat-Sun trip.
None of the 5 day boats who left this morning visited the scales,
so there is no change to those standings. You can see the leaderboard
at www.hamptonsoffshoreinvitational.com
HOI'S BELIEVE IT OR NOT
REEL TIME had SRO (Sting Ray Occurance) during his trip Saturday
night thanks to crew member Jim Foley. Seems there was "something
big" on the line, and when it got to the boat Steve saw it
was a sting ray (yes, like the one that killed Steve Irwin) and
wanted to cut it loose. Jim thought it would be "cool"
to bring the garbage-can-cover-sized ray on board and get a good
look at it. So it came on the boat and Steve ran for the helm
to take cover. "Ray" was returned to sea and no-one
got hurt.
And another "had to see it to believe it" story came
from SUNDAZE. They pulled up to the weigh station and said "You
got to see this!" They were bringing the smaller of their
two big eyes to the boat when it was attacked by a blue marlin
resulting in some impressive slices and gashes.
I HATE MONDAYS
EYECATCHER II (Frank Pollina) lost an engine and soaked his cell
phone and arrived too late to weigh-in their mahi. WHITE WATER
(Anthony Vacarro) had steering trouble on their ride home but
came through the inlet safely close to 8pm.

I have unknowingly failed to mention one of our Morning Crew--Bob
Naso has been there each day with Pete and Joe getting things

Thanks to Amy and Strong's Marine's/new SMTC member Jane Muarry

REEL ACTION (Doug Oakland) was the only overnighter to leave today
and I don't how many of the Day boats are leaving so tomorrow
remains a mystery.
See you at the dock.

PONDER IF YOU WILL.... a wife goes
to the dock to wave her husband off on his high seas adventure
and leaves for a brief moment to do an errand for HIM and misses
his "drop and dash" departure.....does it still count
as her good wife deed of the day? Talk amongst yourselves.

This is my cell number--631-872-8434. Take
it with you. You can use it to check-in if you don't get a response
from the "committee boat" (me) during weigh-in. Sometimes
the noise at the weigh-in station hinders us from hearing check-ins
on the radio.
DAY TWO:
Pete, Joe, Cord and the AM dockboy Alex must have looked like
whirling dervishes this morning as they collected drop cards from
23 day boats and 18 overnights.
When I got to the dock this morning to check on things, I interrupted
"MUTINY ON THE OCEAN RAIDER"--rods were going on the
boats, rods were coming off the boat, bags were going on the boat,
bags were coming off the boat, people were getting on the boat,
people were getting off the boat...you get the picture. And in
the end, Mark and Ava took a joy ride to Westhampton Beach.
13 Overnights were scheduled to return from yesterday and CHASIN'
TAIL (David Mambrino) headed out for the day. PATTI G (Bill Decker)
and crew were waiting at 4pm to weigh in the first overnight fish
for this year--third place yellow (61.5lb). CATHY'S CHOICE (Anthony
Prudenti) came to the scales with a buffet of fish: two Big Eyes
(138.5 and first place 157.5), a 45.5 yellow, 2 mahis (2nd place
5.6 and 5.42) and a 111 mako. A 69lb yellow put LADY JANE (Rob
Maloney) on the board in 2nd and they added a white marlin to
the catch and release category. Denny DeMarco of CAPT DENNY livened
up the place with a 89lb wahoo (not a tournament category, but
good for club awards). If this great catch had been landed by
a club member, it would have broken the record. Shawn Pobiner
(PATIENCE) practiced this virtue while he waited to weigh in his
first place yellowfin with a spare (73lb and 72lb). Brian Hyland
(GUSTO IV) wheeled in his first place mahi (7.54) and a 40lb yellow.
Howard Kessler (ABLE HAND) didn't weigh in anything, but his son
had a stellar day. 11-year-old Alex caught a 28" striped
bass, a 5lb bonita and a mako (estimated 70lbs). Another young
angler also had a special day--Ari Freedman (Mark's son) released
a white marlin (approx. 70) from FISHIN' IMPOSSIBLE. Better watch
out, the future is here is and it's name is Alex and Ari. Congrats
to both on great trips.
The daytrippers returned late into the weigh-in as they tried
to get in all the fishing they could and still get back in time.
Not sure of the arrival order, but here's the highlights by boat
number: SANDRA JEANNE (Mike/Chuck Forman) weighed in a 6.12 mahi
and a small yellow, but kept their second place Mahi from yesterday.
DONNA G (Paul Grosser) showed us his 39lb yellow. C-JOY (Walter/John
Dreyer) stunned the gallery with a 24.86lb Mahi putting them in
first place. Jumping to the top of the yellow fin list was REBEL
(Mike Tucci) with a 62.5lber. VICTORIA'S (Michael Gadman) 44lb
yellowfin didn't best their YF from yesterday but they kept 3rd
place in the species. Don Law of CAROL LIBBY tried to stay on
the board but their 33lb YF didn't do it. POSITIVE ATTITUDE (Michael
Mapes) debuted on the board with the third place Mahi (6.74).
The first legal mako appeared today thanks to MATALA (Anthony
Hermann)--175.5.
Thanks to Mike Ohlstein, new SMTC member Ron Atkinson and Brian
from White Water for their help at the weigh-in. I'm still looking
for help on Wednesday 8/20 and Thursday 8/21. If you can fill
a spot, let me know and include your cell number.
Tomorrow is another day.
See you at the dock.
